In an age where so much of what's on offer is produced overseas, local manufacturers are dropping like flies, local labour costs are higher than those in less developed countries, and you can import products online tax-free, is it possible to build a home made exclusively from Australian products and materials?
Part of that involves deciding what constitutes 'Australian made'. There are a number of different programs to promote Australian made products (including Australian Made, Product of Australia and AUSBUY), which recognise products differently based on the extent to which they've been made or transformed in Australia, the extent to which production costs were incurred here, or the extent to which the companies producing them are Australian owned. It's all in the details, and all worth weighing up.
We pride ourselves in being Aussie and through our partnerships and relationships with local suppliers; we are able to offer our clients many Australian products for their home.
Standards and compliance - Nearly all Australian-made building products are designed with Australian Standards and regulations first in mind, and while many imports are of an excellent quality, you won't always get the same assurances.
Supporting local jobs and industry - A seriously committed 'Made in America' challenge was carried out a while ago, which estimated that in the US, if builders used 5% more American materials, it'd result in the creation of an undeniably impressive 220,000 jobs. Obviously our market's completely different to theirs (and a lot smaller to boot), but it's not too big a stretch to imagine that a similar push here could reap some real benefits in terms of jobs and local industry.
Environmental advantages - There are all kinds of complex variables when you begin to talk about environmental costs for building - and the energy used to transport large volumes of materials to Australia is definitely an important factor
Surety of supply, support and warranties - Another great argument for Australian-made building products is the increased assurance that they'll be available when they're needed, that you're more likely to have proper support, and a reliable means of recourse in the event that, god forbid, anything goes wrong.
