One of the most common ways people come unstuck when planning their patio or outdoor living space is by trying to span their roofing further than it is engineered to go.

Getting good advice early on can save time, money and heartache – and good advice is on hand.

Here are three simple ways to find out how far you can span your roof sheets, determine how many beams and posts you will require and get a firm quote on the cost of the improvements.

1. Engage an architect, building designer (draftsman) or engineer to formally draw what you’d like.  This is the most expensive option, but depending on what you need may well be required.
2. Hire a builder, carpenter or patio company to design and construct your patio or outdoor area.  Part of the process will be getting what they make certified by Council – if your council requires certification.
3. If you are building a simple structure we can provide engineered guidelines for spanning distances and beam loads.  We have helped many people with this over the years and can also assist you to select the best material for your home.  Many Councils now have a private certification system that is easy to follow and comply with. Depending on your design we can supply a Form 15.
