While living on the Gold Coast has many pros, one disadvantage is the lack of space for green areas and in particular gardens. It seems our backyards are getting smaller and we want to know how to achieve the maximum room with limited space.
Aspiring gardeners will be pleased to hear about an innovative trend called “the vertical garden”.
Vertical gardens are essentially frameworks of plants that are arranged on the side of a building, walls, fences, racks or anything that does not require a large land width. Their grid layouts make vertical gardens great design features as well as the perfect way to enjoy greenery.
Vertical gardens have become increasingly popular with shows such as The Block. They can be as simple or elaborate as you desire. No matter where you live, you can add creativity and original design flair to your outdoor area through a vertical garden. Vertical gardens can also be great for permaculture. Plant seasonal herbs, vegies and fruit such as strawberries in a vertical garden right outside you kitchen window, on your balcony or deck. Besides being great to eat they can also provide colour and fragrance to the area.
As we are faced with less time and a growing concern about water consumption, low-maintenance gardens and drought-tolerant plants have become more popular in our gardens.
Planter boxes are also a good addition and can be custom made to suit the vertical garden design. Why not go a step further and accentuate the area with privacy screens and outdoor furniture to match the architecture.
