There’s one good reason why you need to maintain and repair your gutters

It’s been a weird wet summer in South East Queensland, and many other parts of Australia too and a leaking gutter can quickly escalate from a pesky nuisance to a costly drama if regular maintenance isn’t carried out.

All too often we see customers who could have prevented a large amount of damage to their homes or businesses, end up spending more time, money and emotional investment than really should have been spent.

There’s one good reason why every household should be checking their gutters and ensuring that they are maintained, repaired or replaced before it’s too late – and with gutter and accessories available for around $10 a lineal meter it’s one of the cheaper items to replace on a house.

You’ll save money

And if you have lots of box gutters, plenty of it if you undertake regular cleaning and maintenance.  Your location in relation to salt spray or trees will determine how regularly need to clean your gutters and whether a leaf guard has been installed.  Many homes are now designed with flat roofs and concealed box gutters behind a parapet wall.  You don’t see the gutters and it’s the old story of out of sight, out of mind. What you don’t know is if any rubbish, leaves or gum flowers have either blown in or been deposited by helpful crows and are blocking your sump.  If box gutters overflow ceilings can become wet and will become mouldy or even collapse.  In some cases electrical cables have become wet and water tracks in through down lights causing great concern and potential danger for the resident.  It’s not only box gutters that need maintenance. All gutters need to be looked after.

Here’s a list of the trades that can be required just because maintenance has been undertaken:

  • Roofer
  • Plasterer
  • Painter
  • Electrician
  • Marriage counsellor – ok this one is not strictly a trade, but who needs the grief when the funds that have been saved for the family holiday disappear on new gutters, soffits, plastered ceilings and painting because there was two years worth of leaves and flowers in the gutters and the ceiling collapsed with all the rain we’ve been having.

Ok I get it, but I can’t do my own maintenance or repairs – who can help me?

If you’re looking for a reliable and trustworthy tradesman to come and undertake any maintenance and repairs on your gutters and downpipes we can recommend the people who work on our homes.  Call us on 07 5564 8200 for a trusted referral or email us at orders@actionsheetmetal.com or complete an enquiry form here.

My gutters need replacing – what are my choices?

There are three main styles of gutters, referred to as square, quad and half round, with a range of sizes in each profile. The most commonly used gutters are Type M and Qld Quad.  We know that the last two sentences won’t mean much, if anything, to most normal people so under this you will see images of the most common external gutter profiles.  We can also custom fold gutters to suit the design requirements of any property.

At Action Sheetmetal & Roofing we only use genuine Zincalume and Colorbond, both still produced here in Australia after 45 years by Bluescope Steel.  Made for tough Australian conditions with a baked-on paint finish, Colorbond steel is durable and resists chipping, peeling and cracking to deliver long life performance with low maintenance. Non-combustible and resistant to termites, it protects any home against harsh Australian conditions.

So don’t wait for the rain to start again. Check your gutters, give them a clean. Repair or replace the sections that need doing and if you’re planning on making it a weekend job order your materials by COB on Wednesday for a Friday pick up or delivery.  Don’t forget if you need professional help call us on 07 5564 8200 and we’ll give you the name of a reliable and trusted installer.
